Creativity. What is it?

Creativity can be described in many ways. It can be defined as a skill or trait, or the use of the imagination to create something etc. I believe it is a trait that can be taught, and any person can be creative. There are several ways to stimulate creativity and this week we were introduced to some of these methods and some outcomes became clear.

Every person’s brain is divided in half. The right side of the brain is where creativity, style and skill are generated whereas the left side of the brain is quite structured and technical. Activating the right side of the brain can sometimes be a struggle but when activated in can produce some astounding results. This was the aim of some of the exercises we completed in class. This pushed students to their capacity to be as creative as possible. We then were obliged to create the problem rather than the solution by using negative thinking and anti-purpose thinking. In turn the opposite was applied which resulted in certain “big no’s” became apparent and the solutions were looking right in front of us. Personally, I found this technique useful because if you become stuck on producing work on ideation it is a great technique to create some motion and fluidity. It’s like putting one foot back and springing forward using both feet, a great way to bounce back into the swing of things.

For me a main aspect of creativity is having a broad open mind. With an open mind you can work easily in areas we take for granted; with an open mind you can focus on the little but vital things you need in good design. Once your mind is open and the more you focus on the design it reveals more information is revealed about the design. This could be some information that you would normally overlook.

Personally to be creative I need a personal space and need to follow a certain routine. I need to be at a large spacious desk, I put my headphones and play certain music that I feel motivates me to produce my best ideas. When this was prompted to other students in the class some agreed with me while others disagreed. I think that’s what is unique about creativity every person display creativity in different ways and stimulate creativity in many ways.

Creativity is a unique tool and can be interpreted and displayed in many ways like music, art or sport. I believe every person has a certain amount of creativity within them its just a matter of finding ways to stimulate this creativity.
